Maze Land 02 (2020). 150 X150 cm

During this pandemic, our world is like the stage of an immersive drama; a dreamland full of reality and fantasy, past and future. People appear to walk around "The Garden of Forking Paths", trying to numb themselves with discoveries emergent during their lost meanderings. The players are blind as to the garden’s destination, but within this maze, communication and imagination combine to help rid them of physical limitations.

This piece is talking about such a wonderland of dream, childhood and cold war

Shanghairen

I came to Shanghai for the first time when I was 23 years old. Before that, my knowledge of Shanghai began with brands and patterns, such as the wrapper of the “White Rabbit” toffee I loved, the outline of the “Shanghai 555” clock on our table, and the pattern of mum's “Butterfly” sewing machine.

Proust used sounds to describe his impression of the streets of Paris; patterns and symbols are the keys that unlock my memories of Shanghai.

What I have drawn is not a real place in the Yuyuan Garden; rather the memory of the only way I used to travel to work. It is basically a miniature of the city: there are unique traditional characteristics captured brick by brick, yet it actually comprises a short hundred years of glory. I perceive a very outdated and noisy trade market, but also glimpses of many hidden cultural eras and fashionable crossovers. People who pass through here, office workers, tourists, and local residents will be lost in the torrent of architecture. They move through a vibrant matrix of cultural symbols, old traditional signs, characteristically local patterns, and logos of international luxury goods. As they walk around they gradually forget this city, brick by brick, just as a tailor forgets fragments of colourful cloth that drop to the floor after cutting.

The buds of reflection are growing from the wasteland of hard times; life is returning with joyful words, but people will remember the pain of a flower’s fall.

An interpretation of the word "Hospitality" inspires this work. In ancient cultures, hospitality involved welcoming the stranger and offering him food, shelter, and safety. In the past, it could be an exquisite hotel space, a circus bringing people joyful dreams. Presently, it can be not only a safe place of isolation where people can feed their souls with peace but also a communal area where culture-clash and estrangement dissolve.

The theme of bonsai shelf is from my hobby. I usually stand in front of the shelf and enjoy the grids in various sizes and the inside furnishings. In my view, it is like a vertical Chinese palace. Sometimes I even have an image that I am living in the palace. Through the shelf, I can faintly have a view of the scenery in the distant, and it seems that I stand by a window.

Great Yangtze Bridge (2016) 120 X65cm
Great Yangtze Bridge (2016) 120 X65cm

Chinese leaders Chairman Mao adore swimming; they want to demonstrate that we can beat nature by following its example. Mao swam in the Yangtze.

many devoted youngsters followed him in the people's war- they built a magnificent bridge.

This is a great bridge across the mighty Yangtze River, built by great revolutionaries for the people. These marvellous people were dedicated and inspired to the success of this outstanding project.

Cars, lorries and trains have extensively used this bridge for 50 years; but, inevitably, as time passes, new bridges have been built nearby, and this great giant of the past, has become a serious problem because it is now old and rusty, and modern ships are too big to pass underneath.

Some believe that it must be abolished, to make way for the future, others disagree, equally passionate because it is a unique monument and a symbolic reminder of Mao's dream, that should be honoured forever.

Based on the keywords for the Este Lauder's New Year Plan; "Red,Fan and Travel", I created an artwork that related to China culture and also resonates with our studio's style.

The artwork is detailed and ornate. The Red which epitomises the Chinese New Year, features a very crowed wonderland, interwoven with the elegant Blue of the brand.

There are countless tales about Ji Ming Temple, most of them have been forgotten by society. I learned

those different kings, from different ages, used to walk in this awesome temple - they may have been proud, ambitious, sad or lonely, but none of them was devout. They just came and played a role in history, then they vanished, this place was just like a theatre for them. it also became a haven for people to escape to for two thousand years, to protect them from the horror and suffering of war and personal tragedy. Strangely, this place is now a famous place for modem youngsters to pray for success in relationships.

Although devoid of romantic love, the mystery, power and witness of so many years of past history is still present, to inspire change and improvement for those who seek it. This seemingly empty cage is there, waiting for the birds that wish to be rested and rejuvenated, to fly wherever they want.
